DISSECTIONS |
Due to
the numerous external similarities in many of the males it is often
essential that the genitalia be examined. This is best accomplished
by their complete removal from a relaxed or fresh specimen. Although
this may cause some damage to the specimen this may be minimized by
the following technique. The genitalia may sometimes be removed with
a hooked insect pin however in most cases the genitalic capsule is
too firmly attached to be removed in this manner without damaging
the structure. It is best to carefully make a cut lengthwise in the
last gastric tergum, this will allow better access to the genitalic
capsule with a pair of forceps. With the forceps grasp the stipes
and gently tug the capsule clear of the gaster, in some instances
the capsule will be difficult to remove, and will need to be gently
"rocked" back and forth to loosen it. Once removed it may either be
immediately mounted or dissected further if necessary. An alternative
method of exposing the genitalia is to remove one side of the last
tergum and sternum, this will expose the genitalia while leaving the
capsule in place. The major drawback to this method is that it may
not adequately expose features which are necessary for a proper identification.
